A Smart Growth Plan
Smart Growth is about building better communities, “built on the best of the past while growing in a compact way that saves land for the future and offers maximum choice in neighborhood character and convenient access to jobs, services and recreation”. The Plan includes a mixed development with approximately 2 million square feet of commercial and retail space along with a broad range of housing types and options.
An Attractive Location and Site
Developers and users will find the Base attractive for several reasons. It’s a prime location, about 15 miles south of downtown Boston, Cambridge and Logan Airport, a half hour from the Rte. 128/I-95 technology belt to the northwest and Cape Cod to the south. Other amenities include: improved highway access, local skilled work force, excellent school systems, a multi-modal transportation center including the adjacent MBTA Commuter Rail Station, expanded parking, easy one-stop permitting process, attractive tax rate and more.
A Signature of Quality
The Village Center Plan will stimulate growth and generate significant revenues for Abington, Rockland and Weymouth. The Plan preserves nearly 75% of the Base (1,009 acres) for open space and recreation, including forests, grasslands and wetlands where local species can once again enjoy their natural habitats. Much of the open space will be reopened to the public for the first time in 62 years.
Commercial land use will create jobs and a tax base necessary to sustain the future economic health of the Host Communities. The state-of-the-art design creates a desirable environment for high caliber firms seeking maximum productivity, build-to-suit parcels and a well-educated work force that lives nearby.
The housing options will accommodate everyone from singles to seniors with a mix of eight types and sizes of housing. A blend of housing types and architecture will occupy the same neighborhood.
