The Facts

Name: The former South Weymouth Naval Air Station

Site Description:

This 1,441-acre site, used by the Navy for aviation purposes from the 1940s until 1997, was deemed surplus and closed under the Base Realignment and Closure Act. About 1009 acres will be preserved as open space (wetlands, forests, grasslands, golf course, parks, ball fields and tot lots). About 58 acres are reserved for U. S. Coast Guard and FAA. About 384 acres will be developed into commercial, mixed-use/residential and infrastructure.

Location: Bounded by Weymouth, Rockland, Abington and Hingham, Massachusetts. About 15 miles south of Boston, Cambridge and Logan Airport, half hours drive to the Route 128 Technology belt and Cape Cod.
